Handmade pottery process
My work is handmade using a pottery wheel as well as clay slab built techniques. All designs are original artwork and hand carved therefore making each piece one of a kind. This carving technique is referred to as sgraffito.

What is “sgraffito”?
Sgraffito is a form of decoration made by scratching through a colored surface therefore revealing a lower layer of contrasting color. For instance I use a black layer over a white clay body resulting in a strong color contrast design.

Finishing process:
Another equally important step is to seal the outside of the pot with a layer of terra sigillata. Besides using a glaze brush, I also use a sprayer.

What is terra sigillata?
The name terra sigillata means “sealed earth”. It refers to a thin smooth layer of clay which is used as a glaze on the pot. This is what gives the reddish brown color in my pieces.
When the pot is fully dried it is first bisque fired. Secondly it is glazed inside and fired again to 2167 degrees Fahrenheit in an electric kiln. This midrange temperature glaze used on a stoneware clay body makes it very durable pottery.

My handmade pottery is decorative but also very functional and dishwasher, microwave safe.

Inspirations come from the natural surroundings of Vancouver Island where I have lived for the majority of my life. I often utilize photographs that I have taken close to home. I use the photos as a reference to create images suitable for the pottery piece. My goal is to make pottery that brings a touch of the West Coast to your life every day.
