Description
This Handmade pottery is produced in Island Clayworks studio in Gold River, B.C. located on the Central Coast of Vancouver Island.
Process
My work is made using the potter’s wheel or clay slab building construction. The designs are hand carved with clay inlay and underglaze transfer techniques. I also use natural wood rounds for transferring the grain of the wood onto my hand-built projects. Another process of design is called sgraffito.
Sgraffito is a form of decoration made by scratching through a colored surface and revealing a layer of contrasting color. In my work I use a black layer over a white porcelain clay body.
Finishing process
Once carved, I apply transfers, or add color. It is then bisque fired, glazed inside, and fired again to 2167 degrees F. in an electric kiln. This midrange temperature for a stoneware or porcelain clay body makes it very durable.
My handmade pottery is functional, dishwasher and microwave safe. When using original designs and hand brushing decoration, each piece becomes unique.
Inspiration
Living in Gold River, I am surrounded by the natural beauty of the landscape. I take inspiration from plants, flowers, textures, and colors.
The creative process in clay is endless with many clays, finishes, firing techniques and temperatures to choose from and work with. It is a very experimental medium and so the sky is the limit with how to make clay into something beautiful!
