Description

This handmade pottery Tumbler with a Loon design is perfect for your morning cup of coffee or tea.  It also holds a can or bottle of beer!  It makes a perfect gift for the loony bird in your life or a great momento of your trip to the beautiful west coast of B.C.

My pottery is all handmade in Gold River,B.C. which is located on Vancouver Island, the source of my artistic inspiration. Each piece is either thrown on the wheel or formed with slabs of clay and then finished with original designs using a sgraffito technique. Once the carving is done, it is treated with a layer of terra sigillata on the outside and then bisque fired. In the last stage it is glazed on the inside and fired again to cone 5 in an electric kiln. Although it has a decorative nature, it is also very functional and dishwasher and microwave safe. My goal is to make pottery that brings a touch of the West Coast to the home during coffee time, teatime or any kind of mealtime .I hope you will enjoy using the pottery as much as I love making it.

What is sgraffito? sgraffito is a decorating technique which involves scratching through a surface to reveal a contrasting colour underneath. In my case, I apply a dark coloured slip over a white clay body.

What is Terra Sigillata? terra sigillata actually means “sealed earth” . It is a process of refining clay so that only the finest particles are left to produce a thin slip used to act as a glaze on the pot. I use a red clay for my work.

Whenever the opportunity arises, I try to get out and photograph the landscape and wildlife that surrounds our community and eventually some of those images find their way onto the surface of a pot.

If you would like to see some of the local wildlife check out my instagram feed @neillawrencephotography
